Declaration of Independence: Rare Prints on Display

Durham County Main Library is hosting an extraordinary exhibition of three historic printed versions of the Declaration of Independence, loaned from the David M. Rubenstein Americana Collection. You'll see how this founding document was visually reproduced and shared during the early 1800s, including an official 1823 facsimile engraved by William J. Stone alongside two other period broadsides from 1818 and 1819. The exhibition runs through mid-September on the library's second floor, and visitors of all ages can explore the rare prints along with interactive activities and curated library resources on display. The gallery welcomes individual visitors throughout its operating hours with no registration required, though you may experience brief waits during peak times or when large groups are present. Groups of 10 or more can arrange self-guided visits by signing up ahead of time. The library also hosts related programming events during the exhibition period, featuring historians and speakers discussing the Declaration's legacy and meaning.
