“Earth to ET” — Sending Messages to Unknown Extraterrestrials

Interactive STEM activity about sending messages to space.

Wonder whether humanity is alone in the universe? This special program explores the real science of searching for extraterrestrial life. Led by Dr. Rachel Smith, an astrophysicist and meteorite curator from Appalachian State University, the presentation dives into humanity's long fascination with life beyond Earth—from UFO sightings to serious scientific efforts. You'll learn about SETI (the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) and discover why intentionally sending messages into space matters, especially as a young technological civilization in a much older universe. The hour-long presentation takes place in the SECU Daily Planet Theater at the Nature Research Center and is timed to coincide with World UFO Day. This works well for curious kids and teens as well as adults interested in astronomy and space science. General admission to the museum gets you in, so it pairs nicely with time spent exploring the museum's other exhibits and attractions.
