Educator Trek: Butterfly Pinning and Backyard Bug Collecting
Hands-on bug collecting and pinning at NC Museum of Natural Sciences.
This three-hour workshop invites teachers and education professionals to learn hands-on techniques for working with insects. You'll prepare, pin, and mount beautiful tropical butterflies while discovering the methods experts use to catch, preserve, and display these and other arthropods. The session also explores how to start your own backyard insect collection. All materials are provided, including a pinning board, display box, butterfly specimens, and an insect resource manual to take home.
The $70 fee covers everything you'll need, and the workshop qualifies for three contact hours toward North Carolina's Environmental Education Certification or continuing education units. If cost is a concern, instructors want to help—reach out to discuss options. Registration happens online on a first-come, first-served basis, so early sign-up is recommended. This indoor lab-based program is designed for educators at all levels, from classroom teachers to those pursuing their EE certification.
