Hillsborough Guided Walking Tour

Hillsborough Guided Walking Tour

Guided walking tour through one of North Carolina's oldest and most historically significant towns.

Discover one of North Carolina's most historic towns on foot! This guided walking tour takes families through downtown Hillsborough, exploring sites connected to the area's colonial past and role in American history. Starting from the Visitors Center—housed in an eighteenth-century farmhouse—you'll visit landmarks ranging from a 1790s African American-owned distillery to the Orange County Courthouse and the resting place of a Declaration of Independence signer. It's a wonderful way to bring history to life and help kids understand how this 1754 community shaped the region. Come prepared for an active outing: the route includes some uneven ground, so wear sturdy walking shoes and plan to be on your feet the entire time. Bring water and a sense of curiosity! Children under 10 get in free, while kids 11 and up are $10 each. If your family prefers a less strenuous option, the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough offers bus tour alternatives—just reach out to them to explore other choices that might work better for your group.
