Migrating Monarchs

Learn about monarch butterflies and migration at Prairie Ridge, the Museum's nature preserve.

Join us for a hands-on look at one of nature's most amazing spectacles—the annual Monarch butterfly migration. This family-friendly program begins in the Nature Neighborhood Garden, where we'll explore the habitats Prairie Ridge maintains and learn how these spaces support Monarchs on their long journey south. From there, the group heads out into the prairie to search for and observe as many butterflies as possible. If conditions align, you might even get to participate in catching and releasing a live Monarch butterfly. Throughout the program, you'll discover real citizen science projects like the Monarch Larvae Monitoring Project and Monarch Watch that help track these incredible insects. Registration is required to attend, so be sure to sign up ahead of time.
