Mothing for Science

Mothing for Science at Prairie Ridge—discover nocturnal insects with NC Museum of Natural Sciences.

Join the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at Prairie Ridge for a nighttime adventure celebrating National Moth Week! After a brief introduction in the outdoor classroom, you'll use blacklights to observe moths and other nocturnal creatures as they become active after dark. Bring a flashlight and a camera if you have one—curiosity is all you really need. The evening includes Moth Bingo with prizes, hands-on activities for all skill levels, and identification guides you can take home to help with future moth spotting. This program welcomes children ages 8 and up, though anyone under 16 needs to be accompanied by a registered adult. There's also a citizen science component, where you can learn how to contribute your observations to help researchers better understand the moth species in our region. The event is completely free, though advance registration is required. Come ready to explore the nighttime world and discover these fascinating insects up close.
