Mutts Going Miles

Mutts Going Miles

Teens and families combine their love of running and dogs with twice-monthly outings in partnership with Burlington Animal Services.

Do you have a runner in the family who loves dogs? Mutts Going Miles pairs teenagers and adults with adoptable dogs from Burlington Animal Services for outdoor running adventures. Participants get matched one-on-one with a dog that needs exercise and enrichment, creating a win-win for both runner and animal. The program meets twice monthly (typically the first and third Saturday of each month) at the Pet Adoption Center, and it's completely free for everyone in the community. A few things to know before signing up: participants must be at least 14 years old, and anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian along. Pre-registration is required. The dogs selected are typically high-energy animals who've been at the shelter for a month or more, so expect some pulling and jumping as they warm up. The trail itself features rocks, hills, mud, and tree roots—this isn't the right fit for anyone who's unsteady on their feet, and strollers or walkers aren't suitable. Wear proper running shoes and gear, and be prepared for a genuine workout with an eager canine companion.
