OLLI at Duke: Egypt and Nubia in Ancient Africa

This lecture explores two remarkable ancient civilizations that shaped northern Africa's history. Egypt and Nubia were neighboring powers along the Nile Valley, and while they competed for trade routes and resources like gold, their relationship was far more complex than simple rivalry. The presentation surveys their art and artifacts to show how these cultures influenced and interacted with each other. You'll see pieces from the NCMA's own Egyptian collection alongside objects from the special exhibition *Ancient Nubia: Excavating Treasures of the Nile*, currently on display through January. The speaker, Kris Door, is a retired art history professor and longtime museum educator who brings decades of expertise to the subject. This is part of a lecture series offered through OLLI at Duke, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, which creates learning opportunities for older adults.
