Redeeming the Promise of the Declaration of Independence: Louis Austin, the Black Press, and the 20th Century Freedom Struggle

This special evening program explores the life and legacy of Louis Austin, the influential editor and publisher of The Carolina Times newspaper in Durham. Professor Jerry Gershenhorn will discuss how Austin used journalism as a tool to challenge racial injustice and segregation throughout the 20th century, connecting his work to the ideals of the Declaration of Independence. The program is part of a larger initiative bringing historic copies of the Declaration to Durham for public engagement and reflection. This event pairs well with the Declaration of Independence Display currently at the Durham County Main Library. It's geared toward adult audiences, including high school students and intergenerational groups interested in American history, civil rights, and local heritage.
