Southern Tales and Tails

Read aloud to a therapy dog at the library to build confidence and love of reading.

Does your child need a little motivation to practice reading? This program pairs young readers with D'Oreo, a trained therapy dog, for one-on-one reading sessions at the library. Kids in kindergarten through 8th grade can sign up for a 15-minute slot to read aloud to their canine companion in a relaxed, judgment-free setting. D'Oreo might even show off a few tricks during the visit! Children should bring a book they're comfortable with or are currently working through. Registration is required to participate. Siblings are welcome to share a single session if needed—just list both names when signing up. Parents and guardians can stay in the room or nearby seating while their child reads independently with the dog. This gives kids a chance to build reading confidence while connecting with a friendly animal in a calm library environment.
