When Are We Us?

This exhibit explores pivotal moments in North Carolina's story as part of the nation's 250th anniversary celebration. Through historical documents, photographs, and recordings gathered from archives across the state and beyond, visitors encounter the state's experiences with immigration, belonging, civil rights, freedom, and democratic participation. The collection draws on materials funded by the National Historical Publications & Records Commission and tells the experiences of real North Carolinians throughout history. Families should know that the primary sources on display reflect authentic historical perspectives, including some outdated and offensive language. This makes the exhibit thought-provoking for older children and teens interested in understanding how North Carolina's past has shaped the present, though parents may want to preview it or discuss the content with younger visitors beforehand. The exhibit runs through late November at the library's exhibit area during regular operating hours.
